The fact that I know so little about it should be an encouraging thing.
1.) Install the openssh-server RPM. (rpm -ivh openssh-server-2.5.2...
whatever).
2.) Read and edit the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file. I suggest:
- Change "PermitRootLogin yes" to "PermitRootLogin no". Now users will
have to login as themselves, then su to root.
- Change "Protocol 2,1" to "Protocol 2". If there's a 2 protocol, and
it's
supposed to be better, I figured I might as well disallow the 1. But I
don't have any real reason why.
3.) Download Putty 0.51 from somewhere (this lists, last 72 hours, had some
pointers and URL's; otherwise I can mail it to you).
4.) Point it at your server, and it works. Just like that.
Go through the Putty configuration carefully. Ensure that it's talking to
your server using SSH (it can also do telnet), protocol 2, port 22,
encryption 3DES, and set keepalives at 1 minute so the thing won't log you
out automatically if this is desirable.
That should be just about all you need to know to get it up and running.
For anything more you need, www.openssh.com is good; there is also a
commercial version at www.ssh.com. Note that "X Window" is *not* plural;
common mistake.
