$DISPLAY variable

[Ted Gervais]

What is this error I get when I try to open emacs or some other devices. I 
get a statement like:  'no $DISPLAY environment variable' .

Obviously I have to enter something, somewhere. Has anyone seen this before 
and if so how do I fix it?
