That did the trick.  Follow these steps to make an Epson C80 sing on 
Red Hat:

# rpm -e printconf-gui
# rpm -e printconf
# rpm -e LPRng

Get source code for cups-1.1.12 and gimp-print-4.1.99-rc1 (see
www.linuxprinting.org for info, docs, and links).  Unpack, and do:

# cd cups-1.1.12 
# ./configure && make && make install
# cd ../gimp-print-4.1.99-rc1
# ./configure --with-cups
# make && make install
# /etc/init.d/cups start

Open a browser, point it at localhost:631, and configure your printer.
