First, you need to configure /etc/nsswitch so that passwd,shadow, and
group are set to compat.

Right now, they should be set to files nis.  When this is in place,
Everyone in the NIS passwd map can be access by finger.  Once you change
that to compat, only those specified in the Netgroup will be identified
by finger.  (using finger as a password lookup test program)

example netgroup entry in passwd:
