That command won't help you much anyway:
# rndc status
rndc: 'status' is not yet implemented

Hrmm, I don't have a file /etc/rndc.key, my key is in /etc/rndc.conf

What version of bind are you running? I have:
# rpm -q bind
bind-9.1.0-10

Please post your /etc/named.conf, /etc/rndc.conf, log messages from when 
you started named, and perhaps /etc/rndc.key files. Remove your private 
key info. 
I won't be able to look at it until morning, but perhaps someone else 
will answer before then.
