What I suggest is to use fetchmail to pull your mail down, have that delivered
into sendmail and procmail, and the point kmail at your local pop/imap server.
You get the best of both worlds. I've been doing this for a while and it works
like a charm. You get the added advantage of being able to pull down mail
when you've broken kmail/kde and in my case, using imap exclusively to read my
mail, I can also ssh into the server and use mutt when I'm at work (like right
now). I even have mutt using imap locally to coordinate the locking and don't
have to worry about different types of applications fighting each other for
mailboxes and messages.

I've done some filtering via procmail, but frankly have been quite disappointed.
I still need to go through it manually since I've had spam not flagged and real
mail considered spam, so now I'm just doing basic header checks on the To:
header to determine "bulk" mail, and just get faster with the delete key on the
rest. procmail does a nice job of filing all my mail into folders, though,
and that makes it easier to read from the different clients.
