Does anyone know why SMTP AUTH is not enabled by default in Red Hat's 
packaging of sendmail? AUTH harms nothing, is optional to use, and doesn't 
get in the way if not used, but is a wonderful thing when people choose to 
use it.

I don't see any downside to enabling it... why is it disabled by default?
