Just airing an issue and looking for opinions..
I have been installing Linux since 1996..
I have installed Red Hat 4.2 and 5. now recently 7.2..
I have primarily stayed with Caldera and SuSe installs.
During the month of April I decided to try Red Hat again for a notebook
install.
The install went well but I had some KDE logout/Crash issues. Tech
support
suggested an update with Up2Date agent. I had never tried this auto
approach.
So, I signed onto to the Network, my ( new 7.2) install was inspected
and 182
packages were suggested to be updated, total 240 megabytes. I fainted!!
Well if I had not been having problems (crashes) I might not have for
gone the
download but..... So, 40 hrs later I was updated.... The machine's
crash problems
continue but not at every logout : ^(..

However, I emailed Red Hat management and complained that a new purchase

should not require so many corrections and offered to purchase update
CDs.
They replied that the updates were to keep current for security and to
burn
my own CDs.
Truth is only about 30 megs were pertinent to security, 200 megs were
updates/broken code and I can't burn my own CDs.

Are other users accustomed to large updates or do they simply wait for a

new
version???
And are others interested in emailing RH management to request they
offer
update CDs.

Comments Please.. No Flames :^)

Bob
