I've
had this problem happen to me when the users home directory was not
accessible. Check to make sure you can read/write into the users home
directory. I'm assuming your using NFS in addition to
NIS???
In
addition try to log into the user your having a problem with, in a non-X shell,
like a simple rlogin.
