  Your last statment is correct!  I use the ones supplied int the Diald example

In a file called /usr/lib/ppp/diald.earthlink.net

    /usr/sbin/diald /dev/ttyS1 /dev/ttyS1 lock debug 20 -m ppp local 127.0.0.2
\
      remote 127.0.0.3 defaultroute modem crtscts \
      connect "chat -v -f /usr/lib/ppp/pppchat.pi" \
      dynamic -- debug noipdefault
