The way I do it now is to log in as my regular account, and su to root to
start ppp. Since I have fvwm, I have one screen for root to keep track of the
system (i.e. I have top and tail -f /var/log/messages in two
xterm sessions). I always use the control-panel for most of my admin stuff,
so it is also up. With the other seven screens I do what ever.
Another way I did it was to have a cron job look for a file every 1 minute or
so. This file if present would
trigger off ppp. I had two scripts in /usr/local/bin called startppp,
stopppp and they would touch or rm the
file.
Now this ezppp I have to check out, but for now I always need root for
something, but I've been using
Linux for too long and I'm just used to being root to start ppp.
