Your ISP may have told you incorrectly. You should not have a permanent
entry for your ISP unless you are permanently on line, and even then you
probably should not.
Here is the relevant portion of my W95 hosts file, which is also correct
for Linux:
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.0.0.3 ccurley1
192.0.0.4 bad_dog
192.0.0.32 laptop
The first entry could also be:
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.domain.net
or some such. On some systems where I am testing IP code or otherwise
pinging myself, I'll do:
127.0.0.1 localhost lo
which lets me call my loopback address either loopback or lo.
But what is key here for your situation is that all of the names for a
given host _must_ be on the same line as the IP address.
Any line that does not have an IP to hostname map should either be empty or
a comment, and so preceded with a sharp (#).
The process of setting up the PPP link to your ISP should add a route to
your ISP, so you don't need it in hosts. Similarly, taking down the PPP
link should remove the route to the ISP.
