remove the "+pap" line from /etc/ppp/options, this requires the server
you are connecting to to authenticate its self with your machine, which it
can't do, so it fails.  pppd will use pap if it is asked to by the server.

Also, Redhat 5.1 did this, i'm not sure about 5.1 edit
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets and make sure it reads:

username * password

5.0's netcfg made it look like this which is wrong:

username ppp0 password
