Ok, this URL explains the NE2000 compatible network cards, and what you will
have to do get them to work. Again, the Linksys EtherPCI Lan II Cards contain
the winbond chip in them, So this definately applies to our cards.

Yes, I initially installed redhat 4.2 on my system, and also purchased two of
the Linksys EtherPCI Lan II Cards. These particular PCI cards are clones of
the old NE2000 ISA network cards ( apparently that's pretty common for the
less inexpensive cards ). Specifically they have the winbond chip on there
circuit boards. This winbond series is not automatically detected by the
Redhat 4.2 or 5.0 kernel. ( I'm talking from experience). So you will have
to
recompile the kernel and explicitly specify support for both the PCI network
cards and the ISA NE2000 cards.

Use the textual version of make config, not the X utility. The X utility ( I
don't remember what it's called). doesn't give the options necessary for
 doing this.

If you are using 4.2 and not redhat 5.0, The source code for the kernel will
also have to be patched in order to support the winbond chip. Redhat 5.0
source code for the kernel already had the patch applied, but I still needed
 to recompile before it worked.

Forgive me, but all my documentation for this is at the office, so I will
have
to send another mail tommorrow, which will contain the URL for this patch.
This URL also explains the situation a little more in depth.

 << Hi,
I am trying to find if my EtherPCI Lan Card II of linksys is supported by
redhat. During install of redhat I ve hardly tried to make it detected by
my redhat 4.2 partition (dev/hda1), but it asked for the right I/O and IRQ.
The problem is that, my Pnp card, successfully installed on my win95
partition (/dev/hda1)..I do not find anywhere any I/O and IRQ for it.
On win95, I found the one for my com ports of modem and mouse..and no one
  for my Ethetnet card.
I went in netcfg>addnew Interface, selected Ethernet, gave an IP to it and
instead of DHCP or BootP, I ve manually entered TcP IP..but I guess that s
not the right way of doing it ..cause there s no I/O or IRQ assigned and
even if I do ifconfig eth0, I got message "No such Device".

Could you pls help me for that..

  Thanks so much
