Okay. . . here I am, the wet-eared newbie, trying to explain the
subtleties of DNS and dynamic IP allocation. . . take all information as
suspect.

Here's what I think is happening.  Your ISP assigns your ppp interface
to an IP address dynamically depending upon which modem gets your call. 
On their end, each of those dialup lines has a DNS name.  So, for
example, their "modem #0" might be assigned to IP address 1.2.3.1, and
have DNS name DIAL8-ASYNC44.DIAL.NET.NYU.EDU.  The next time you dial
in, you might get "modem 1" with IP address 1.2.3.2, which might map to
the DNS name DIAL9-ASYNC45.DIAL.NET.NYU.EDU.

Now, that name and IP address should only apply to your ppp interface,
not to your machine; what does your /etc/hosts file say?  Are you
connected to any net other than through your ppp connection?

Why is this a problem?
