When I have to set up ppp in RH 5.0, I use netcfg, as root. Robert Harts
RedHat PPP-Tips, available at www.redhat.com is my ever-present guide.
Following this is a little tedious, and I nearly always make a few
mistakes and have to start over, but if I take the time and keep trying, I
always get it working. I've done it five or six times (due to changing
systems and various ignorant things I did that messed up my system).
RedHat has a special way of doing this that can be made to work.
