In reality, Tom Brady was hiding a lot of stink. Yes, Cassel can't run the offense yet, though I wouldn't count out a guy who played in the Little League World Series (there, a baseball reference.) I suspect Cassel has the tools to become a servicable QB by the end of the year.
But the real story here is an old defense that is getting smoked. Deltha O'neil is the Julio Lugo of football -- always has been. I was dismayed when we picked him up and it didn't take much for other teams to figure out how weak he is. Rodney Harrison is too old to pick up O'neil's slack. (Al Michaels said, "The Patriots have only replaced two defensive players from last year." like it was a good thing.) Tom Brady made this team what it is. The Patriots sucked before he started, and they are likely to suck until he's back. Ray How bad is Matt Cassel? They've come up with an Runs Created-like stat for football players that measures how many yards the player was worth over a replacement player. It's called DYAR.
