But they won't likely have the wild card sewn up when they get to New York. The
magic number is seven, and the Sox and Rangers have eight games between them
before the Sox go to the Bronx. So they'll have to play tough through the
Yankees series. We'll see what happens if they're within a game by the end of
next weekend.

The thing is, once we have the wildcard slot sown up,
Francona will not be playing all out to win that last series against the
Yanks.  We match up pretty well against the Angels, and I think he is quite
satisfied to ride into the playoffs on the wildcard with a rested team.
And I can't argue with that philosophy!

And the Sox are only five games back in the AILC (all-important
loss column). I wouldn't rate their chances of overtaking New York that
high, but it could happen. I'd love for the Sox to go into the Bronx
three or four back in the loss column, just to see if they can make the
weekend interesting. But even if they don't, the wild card berth is
        basically assured at this point.

I think we have a better chance of catching the
Yankees than the Rangers have of catching us.  We're only 6 games
back vs. 7.  We're a better team than the Rangers.  And we
have 3 head-to-head games against the Yankees.
