Estimated cost of signing Gonzalez: 1 year, roughly $3 million. Estimated cost of signing Scutaro: 3 years, roughly $27 million, a first-round draft pick. And if anyone wants to make the "Who cares? It's not my money" argument, I offer this: At this time last year, the Sox were trying to sign Mark Texeira while being aware they had Julio Lugo on the books for two more seasons at a total cost of $18 million. So, for the cost of an overpaid shortstop who couldn't play, the Sox might have been able to raise their offer to Texeira to the point where they might have been able to sign him. So, I ask: Why would the team want to overpay on a long-term deal to yet another shortstop who can't play? Haven't we been down this road before?
