I think Dan has it much tougher than most of us. Even, I would say,
people in CT.

Where the Sox are in the standings has no impact on my watching them or

So here is my "fandom" question.

I've concluded that the Sox won't win this year, primarily because they
won't make it into the playoffs. This really has no effect on how
closely I watch the team or how I follow the season.

Is this normal behavior, or will most folks on this list stop following
the Sox when they come to the same conclusion?

For all this talk of "bridge jumping" etc, there seems to be little
pragmatic difference in action regardless of our beliefs.

I don't remember Theo actually calling it a bridge year. Did he use
those words? Even if he did, I don't take bridge to mean "won't compete
for a title." It means "will bring in old guys on short contracts who we
think can play."

There is a fascinating New Englandian tendency -- maybe it's just a Red
Sox phenomenon? -- to throw oneself off a bridge at the tiniest hint of
trouble. Wait, not fascinating, aggravating.

Baseball is a game of averages. Things even out over time. The Sox have
outstanding pitching -- I don't think anyone disagreed with that at the
beginning of the season. The question going in was if they would hit
enough (which I think too much was made of). Injuries can happen, but if
those don't get in the way, Josh Beckett will not be sporting a 7-plus
ERA in September and John Lackey won't be at 5 either.

Similarly, the Rays will come back to earth and the Padres will not win
the NL West.

It's not unreasonable to have questions and worries when a slump hits --
especially at the start of the season -- but it just seems excessive to
call the season over 30 games into the year when there was, and is,
every reason to expect them to play better.

I too was pissed at the incredible crappiness of the April Sox. Just
thought that surrendering was a silly option.

Hey, Theo called it a bridge year, not me. I just quoted the guy.

I'm still not convinced this team is very good. Drew hasn't missed his
obligatory 20-game stretch yet. I'm not sure Papi can keep this up, but
I hope he can. Varitek is not going to finish the season with a
1.000-plus OPS. The bullpen is dicey and I'm pretty sure our starters
aren't going to go into the eighth inning most games.

Maybe Dice-K has found his groove, but he'll have to fight his history.
Buccholz is better than I thought. Lester will be better than he is.
Beckett, who knows. Same for Lackey. Maybe he'll end up on the DL as
well.

For the record, I'm not miserable. I'm just a fan who has concerns. I'm
not sure why you happy folks have to dump on those of us who disagree.
I'm not critical of anyone else who thinks highly of the team as long as
they're intellectually honest and hold consistent opinions.

Let's see how the season plays out.

What do you mean convert?

I've been pleading patience all along. Our pitching has been the worst
in the league, but it's not REALLY the worst. There's a big correction
coming (or now begun).

I've been amazed at how many people gave up on the season sometime in
mid April.

The insurmountable deficit for the wild card lead has been cut to two
games and we're not even out of May yet.
