"These averages will give the Red Sox 91 games +/- 1" Okay, let's not have them play the games because it's a foregone conclusion.
The games must be played. And the difference between 91 and 95 can be made up from a Friday to a Monday at any time throughout the season. I AM HOPEFUL. I like our chances. I like our team. I like that Ortiz is likely still off steroids and is learning to hit the ball out of the park anyway now (or he found a new undetectable supply). I like that Ellsbury will be back and bringing speed to the bases. I like that Wakefield is getting into the warmer months and his pitches will dance like tongues of fire of Pentecost. I like that they've discovered that tek should always catch for Dice-K. Obviously, the team of April and the early part of May was not prepared to start the season. But they made it through and here we are only 2 games out of first. I really don't think NY is better than the Sox. ________________________________ From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ray Salemi Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2010 3:15 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Two games behind Yankees Baseball is a game of averages. Did he use those words? Even if he did, I don't take bridge to mean "won't compete for a title." It means "will bring in old guys on short contracts who we think can play." There is a fascinating New Englandian tendency -- maybe it's just a Red Sox phenomenon? -- to throw oneself off a bridge at the tiniest hint of trouble. Wait, not fascinating, aggravating. Baseball is a game of averages. Things even out over time. The Sox have outstanding pitching -- I don't think anyone disagreed with that at the beginning of the season. The question going in was if they would hit enough (which I think too much was made of). Injuries can happen, but if those don't get in the way, Josh Beckett will not be sporting a 7-plus ERA in September and John Lackey won't be at 5 either. Similarly, the Rays will come back to earth and the Padres will not win the NL West. It's not unreasonable to have questions and worries when a slump hits -- especially at the start of the season -- but it just seems excessive to call the season over 30 games into the year when there was, and is, every reason to expect them to play better. I too was pissed at the incredible crappiness of the April Sox. Just thought that surrendering was a silly option. Drew hasn't missed his obligatory 20-game stretch yet. I'm not sure Papi can keep this up, but I hope he can. Varitek is not going to finish the season with a 1.000-plus OPS. The bullpen is dicey and I'm pretty sure our starters aren't going to go into the eighth inning most games. Maybe Dice-K has found his groove, but he'll have to fight his history. Buccholz is better than I thought. Lester will be better than he is. Beckett, who knows. Same for Lackey. Maybe he'll end up on the DL as well. For the record, I'm not miserable. I'm just a fan who has concerns. I'm not sure why you happy folks have to dump on those of us who disagree. I'm not critical of anyone else who thinks highly of the team as long as they're intellectually honest and hold consistent opinions. Let's see how the season plays out. Our pitching has been the worst in the league, but it's not REALLY the worst. There's a big correction coming (or now begun).
