As much as I would love to see Cliff Lee in a Red Sox uniform, there is no way
that is gong to happen. He will be looking for a huge long term contract, and
he'll probably get it somewhere, but the Red Sox will not pony up. I think
they feel like they have a starting rotation locked up that should get them to
the playoffs (sans injuries), and they might be right about that. And let's
face it, despite all their rhetoric, the Red Sox management only wants a team
that has a reasonable chance of getting them to the playoffs and will keep the
stadium full. They are not really interested in spending a penny more than
that to increase the likelihood a World Series berth.

I have no interest in a token effort. Do or do not do...there is no token.

That said, I don't buy this whole idea that the Sox and the Yankees should
distort their rosters with a specific goal of winning the 5 games (max) that
Lee will face the other team. The fact of the matter is that this kind of
planning always ends in disappointment. Out of 5 games (max) that they might
meet each other with Lee pitching the team with Lee will probably win 3 and the
other team 2. Maybe 4-1. Very unlikely to be 5-0.

The reason we NEED to get Cliff Lee is that we need an ace. Beckett is done,
Dice-K never was. Lester and Buckholz are great, but we can't pray for rain 3
games out of 5.

Well, I guess the Sox HAVE to be in on Lee, don't they?? How can you not make
at least a token effort to sign this guy, with
his post-season success (oh, and he's been pretty good during the regular
season, too). Especially if they succeed in getting
someone to take Dice-K off their hands.
