I think they jury is still out on Crawford. Hard to believe that he has
suddenly gotten so bad, and I don't buy the 'I got my
payday, so I'm gonna chill now; theory. From all reports (and what else do we
have to go on, really?) he is an extremely

hard worker and has taken his bad year very seriously. I tend to put him into
the 'it takes a year to adapt to a new environment'
category, that seems to be exacerbated by playing in a market like NYC or
Boston. I would expect a big bounce-back from

him next year. Lackey I don't see ever pitching well here. Best we can hope for
is an $18m/tr innings eating, consistently
racking up 14 wins.

As for Youk, I see no reason to dump him at this point, especially since we
don't have a 3Bman in house who is ready. I don't
see Theo leaving, regardless of the Cubs opening.

I can see them retaining Papi. I haven't looked at the FA list but am not sure
there is anyone who is a better fit than him for DH.
Oh, and he had a great year too.... He surpassed his averages in every category.

I think we will need to figure out RF and closer and potentially the set-up
role as well, if Bard moves to the ninth. SS as well,
although I would not be averse to bringing Scutaro back. He had a monster
September.

I was actually really impressed with Lester's performance last night. 2 ER on 3
days rest was pretty impressive, and he
really gutted through a few innings. Kudos to Lavarnway as well, for his work
with Lester. Hopefully he takes this positively
and is back to the real Lester next April.

We've gone over Theo's free agent failings a few times on this list. He's
clearly had more success with players he's acquired through trade (like
Gonzalez.)

But the free agents we've brought in behave as if they've already scored their
payday and no longer have to compete. Why is that? Is it a failure of Theo to
understand their personalities or make up?

Or does the fault lie with Tito? His steady management served this franchise
well in our early years when there was no shortage of frenetic energy, but have
we gone too far in the "talent will win out in the end" mentality?

I'm not sure what the answer is.But  I'll amend with my blame assignments of a
few weeks ago. Players deserve the bulk but I'm splitting the remainder evenly
between Theo and Tito.

Why Youk? To me, try to milk another year or two from him at 3B while looking
down the road for a replacement, at which point he slides in at DH to replace
