Tom, I think its a great idea to make your own spray bar out of 3/4 pvc pipe, thats what I did in my 55G and now Im in the process of upgrading into a 72G bowfront and Im using the same set up.  Never had a problem with any type of unwanted algae growing behind my rocks, I have a diagram of my setup on my web site you can check it out there at www.aquamansreef.com  HTH's Joe.
