Jola,
Hello Jola and the list...
If your lights are one-year old...IMHO its time to exchange them (bulb-shift
to red spectrum). The problem that I have was related to this...As a
background to all of this, I had several pictures taken before the problem
(I wish I was back at this point) and sent them to Ron at the 9 month date
(I was going to order some corals). Then..."poof"... slowly over the next
months it started (NASTY STUFF). I thought the rock was leeching nutrients
out...Then I remembered, "only bad things happen quickly to a reef"...So, it
occured so slowly it must not be that bad. As I reflect on it, its not the
worst thing I've ever done =0)
The PO4 and NO3 levels were low at the time...etc., etc...But...
The bulbs were ~ 1 year old (URI lamps)...I took them out and exchanged
them.Guess what, the algae is slowly going away (about as fast as it
started).
Ron has been busy with work outside of the shop and does not have alot of
time recently to get to his e-mail...Call and if you can't speak with him,
talk with Sue...OK?
I'm running 720 W of VHO lighting (tar ballast-for longevity) in a 4' long
125 gallon reef. Sue knows alot about the bulbs I'm using. When I changed
them, I had to drop the animals 1/2 way down. The light coloration was far
blue-whiter than before. The animals needed to "lighten" up the zooanthelle
and adjust to the new spectrum. IMHO, take Ron's advice and change them
every 6 months and you'll avoid all your recent algae problems.
Well...that's about it...give them a call and you'll "get it together" Ron
has been batting "1.000" for such a long time (2 1/2 years for me)...I can't
argue with success!
Take care,
Chuck
