There is always a possibilty of overflow or complete draining when
transferring water from one tank to another. My system has an overflow dam in
the refugium in the event the powerhead from the tank stops pumping for any
reason the refugium will not completely empty....It could over flow, however,
if the drain tube becomes clogged with a snail (already happened). So, I put
a screen over the drain in the refugium overflow and it can't clog again.
Even if it ran over it would stop after about ten gallons because I take
water from the top of the display tank to feed the refugium. You can design
any system you like. Many people use check valves and stand pipes for water
level controll and shut off. Use your imagination. I have about 50gph flowing
through a 10 gallon refugium. This flow rate seems to work very well. It has
been a very fun and rewarding project (probably the least expensive.....) I
have baby Trochus, Stombus, and Nassarius snails, bristle worms, several
different macroalgaes, and Amphipods growing in the refugium. I might add
more diversity in the future (via Inland Aquatics or Indo-Pacific Sea Farms).
It has a 5 inch oolitic DSB. BTW, be very carefull with this substrate if you
use it because it will crash your tank chemistry IME. I use 2 15 watt "grow
lights" over a 5/16 plexiglas top with drilled ventilation holes. Very
simple. Functions very well.
