IMO a properly set-up refugium should resupply the display tank's DSB with
microinverts that are consumed by predators in addtion to nutrient export via
growth of macroalgaes. The process of regenerating microinverts in the
refugium also provides fantastic food for corals. There are additional
benefits, of course, to running refugiums but the three primary ones are
phosphate/nitrate reduction, cultivation of microinverts to replenish DSB,
and cultivation of food not otherwise available in closed systems for corals
and clams. Refugiums are easy to add and inexpensive. I can't imagine a reef
system without one. Great post BTW!
