AGREED and DISAGREE,
I too, think that a 30 is too small of a tank for a novice/intermediate, too
many variables working against you, but it CAN be done.
Second, I disagree with the statements regarding Plate Corals (fungia,
heliofungia, halomitra) It is not only possible, but as long as you provide
high alk and you don't damage the plate, it's down-right easy to keep these
(not as a host for Clowns). I've been keeping Reef tanks for over sixteen
years and have kept/fragged many of these, and I've also had them (purple)
grow out of some sweet LiveRock from the Marshall Isles. Again, Alkalinity
being more important than Calcium,  to keep these.
Also, don't forget that some Corals are more prone to damage from shipping,
than others...this Coral, if not handled correctly, can develop bacterial
infections that don't make themselves known until weeks after arrival. (MAIL
ORDER SUX !)
