I might also look at the pump to see if it is putting out a constant
pressure. It just seems to me that the water level/pressure must change
dramatically for this to happen. I have an ETS 750 and it clearly has days
in which more "junk" is produced than others, but it would never gush a
gallon of water in a short amount of time unless the water level got way too
high.

Hmmm, possible. When I check it, the handle is always in the same spot, but
that is not to say that the internals have not moved. I will replace this
weekend and see if that helps.
Thanks,
Shane

Is it possible that the ball valve has failed ?
What I mean to say is when the skimmer is gushing water, has the
valve somehow been forced wide open shooting the water level in the skimmer
higher than normal ?

Subject: Skimmer adjusments....
All,
Wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if there is
anything that can be done about it. I have a red sea berlin skimmer (yes, I
know) and it seems to work okay. Here is the problem though. It will not
produce any foam for a couple of days, then all the sudden it goes nuts and
dumps a bunch of foam/water into the cup and overflows into the sump. I
would use a 1 gallon container to catch overflow, but the problem is that I
really think it would overflow that as well. I will let it go for days
without any foam, then one morning I will get up and it will be gushing
water from the cup.
Sometimes it will work great for a few days, and pull really nasty
dark crap from the water, then whammy, one day (or night) I will peak in and
it will just be gushing water out of the top of the cup. I check the sump at
least 2 times a day, and for the life of me, cant seem to catch this thing
before it just overflows.
The skimmer is hooked to my Iwaki 100 RLT but flow is controlled
through a ball valve. It does not seem to be an adjustment problem, because
it will run great for a few days, then just loose it. Not only that, but I
don't have the patience to adjust the skimmer 2-3 times a day.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
TIA
Shane C.
