The reason things become nitrate factories is because they are aerobic. If it
happened the way you said it would actually be a denitrifying factory, which
would be good. IMO you would be better of taking the zoomed powerheads
smashing them with a sledge hammer and installing a couple sea swirls or just
some decent powerheads. Those things need to be cleaned weekly to keep
operating.
