Thanks...I agree they do need to be cleaned allot...but I only use them as
surface agitators as I have 4 other power heads (maxi jets) two in the back
of the tank above the sand bed and two in the front about mid way...so I
think I do have enough circulation and current...was just asking the best
way to clean the sponge inserts on the things!

The reason things become nitrate factories is because they are aerobic. If
it
happened the way you said it would actually be a denitrifying factory, which
would be good. IMO you would be better of taking the zoomed powerheads
smashing them with a sledge hammer and installing a couple sea swirls or
just
some decent powerheads. Those things need to be cleaned weekly to keep
operating.
