Well, that's hard to say without knowing the size of your tank. Keeping an
eye on your pH, and a good calcium test kit is a good way to tell what is
"enough"

Nice size clam! Mine is only 2 to 3 inches right now

I have been doing something very similiar for a few years now. I have a 5
gallon plastic bucket into which my RO/DI water filter automatically keeps
full via a vacuum float switch. I add powdered Kalkwasser every couple of
days when I notice the pH of my tank starting to drop. Also in the bucket I
have a small Maxi Jet powerhead. I have two float switches in series ( for
fault tolerance) in my sump which are connected to me Neptune Pro
controller. They operate the Max Jet in the Kalkwasser bucket when the
float switches drop. The pump sometimes pulls out some of the solid
kalkwasser, but most of the time it just pulls the clear fluid. I have had
to replace the pump once in about 2 years ($12) FWIW Good luck!
