Is rock support really necessary? Seems that the rock would sit firmly on top of the sand unless they are undermined by sifting animals, that are said to be detrimental to a live sand bed also.
Also is there an inexpensive source of suitable sand, my LFS charges 1.00 per pound?

I set all my rock on PVC, I use 3" diameter PVC with a bunch of holes drilled
in. I put the sand in and then push these down in the sand. The sand filles
in and around them and the top of the pipe is just barely covered. I prefer
that then covering exspensive LR with sand.
