Doesn't have to be, no.  But remember you do have to have a glue that will 
stick the thinner plastic to what ever fittings you are using.

Depends on the size of the pump you are using to feed it and whether you 
control the water flow rate on the entry or exit to the unit.

Depends a lot on the system calcification rate.  Ball park figure that 
people start at is 1 LPM
