I forgot to tell you guys about this one...
As I am opening the door to my house, I hear this awful
sucking/regurgitating noise. It was loud, and did not sound like a good
thing at all. Immediately, I knew that it was my main return pump, and that
can not be a good thing, because if my return pump is sucking air, it means
my sump is empty.
Well, indeed, my sump was empty. My new and totally uncool calcium reactor
that I built had the output tube slip out of its spot where it dumps into
the sump, and had thus drained my entire sumps worth of water, a total of
about 15 gallons, onto the floor, as well as whatever the tank would
overflow into the sump, until the water dropped below the overflow gates. To
make matters worse, the water had flown over the back of my sump, and onto
the floor behind the sump and tank. I could not reach any of it, and would
have had to remove everything out from under my tank to get to it. It would
have been a 3 hour project. Thus, I could not soak it up with any towels. It
just soaked right into, and probably through the floor. Not a dang thing I
could do to stop it. About a half hour after I got home, I found a spot
about 4 feet away from the tank where water had run over and soaked up
through the carpet. Not a good sign.
Bad news was not only that the sump had drained onto the floor, but also
that I live upstairs in an apartment. Our downstairs neighbors weren't home,
so I left them a note. I have not heard from them yet, but I am sure I will
be doing some painting to cover up water spots. Wish me luck in my
painting!!
Just another day in the life of a reefkeeper.....
