Shane, thank you for backing me up on this, I know we had differences
early on but I'm glad we agree about clams.
I am not aware if these bulbs are new or not, they are made outside of
Munich, Germany by Osram, the subdivision of the company is Radium. They
run best on an HQI or Blueline E ballast, I am not sure of a 175 watt
version but I beleive there is, otherwise there is a 175 watt 20k made by
someone else. I think most people are using the 400 watt version, these are
the easiest to find. I know Dr. Mac uses these bulbs w/ great success in
his coral farm, they seem to have the best growth and coloration in one
bulb. I would use them on my tank except for 3 things:
1. The ballast costs too much-$180 each!
2. The bulbs must be replaced every 6-9 months
3. The bulbs cost $120 each!
I instead opted to go with a Aqualine Bushke fixture 2 x 250 HQI for my SPS
and clam tank. Will end up costing around $700 but it has a whole $hitload
of PAR and the bulbs are $85 and last 14-18 months. Plus it is in a sleek
hanging fixture that provides excellent coverage and..... the whole fixture
is dimmable! I havent ordered yet but will definately post on its
performance when I get one- probably around Christmas.
HTH
Andrew
