YUK! I just had a major algae bloom in my 125 gal reef tank. It's red/brown
scummy stuff that seems to have appeared over just a couple of days
(probably more like over the weekend, I was away). I syphoned as much as
possible off everything. Do these things happen from too much light or
what? I know I leave them on too long, but being a terminal insomniac I
hate watching a dark tank. All the water chemistry is fine, but I don't own
a phosphate test kit. Could that have set it off? I didn't really change
anything that I can put my finger on. Maybe I got too heavy handed with
feeding. Now that I'm thinking/writing about it, I did add more frozen fish
to the feedings recently. Before, I had used mostly flake food with frozen
brine shrimp once each evening. Whenever I feed, the fish seem ravenous,
but all the critters look fat and happy physically. The back of the tank
was a solid SHEET of this red crud. Not only unattractive, but covered my
poor corals. I gently syphoned as much as possible out with a cloth filter
bag attached to the other end of the syphon. It was just PACKed with this
miserable stuff.
Any and all suggestions gratefully accepted.
TIA
Larry

I've heard it said that your worst day when
you're alive is better than your best day
           when you're dead. Personally, I think that's
just a bunch of crap that dead people say. (Jeremy Swiller)
