I started with the Apple II and TRS-80s. Both allowed for simple text
interaction and immediate feedback.

I'd probably look at Python or Ruby today for similar reasons. I
especially like Heroku for deployment free Ruby development.

I'm also very interested in some of the educationally-oriented
Smalltalk distributions.
