Thanks for the input, guys! To round out the discussion, here are the
suggestions I received via Twitter:

mlassoff: @atxryan Commodore BASIC on a Commodore 64. Best options for
aspiring programmers: Alice (http://is.gd/oVt8) & DarkBasic (http://
is.gd/oVtv)

nownot: @atxryan although I didn't program as a child I do have a
opinion. I'd go with java, alot of documentation, object oriented, runs
on anything.

alexcc: @atxryan BASIC on Apple IIe. nothing like gotos and integer
line #s.. Do they still have LOGO

mattsemar: @atxryan I wrote a ton of games in BASIC on my Commodore
64. It was a good way to learn about variables and loops. Ruby works
these days.

drhayes: @atxryan Yes, since I was about 6. I started with Apple
BASIC. I'd suggest Python for learning a new language now, or maybe
Shoes (in Ruby).

padrelife: @atxryan How about turning children onto creating robotic
lego creations? http://mindstorms.lego.com/eng/Overview/default.aspx
