The starter MacBook pro (13") is fine for graphics design. It has ample
processing power for creative suite. I've used it for just that. As a matter
of fact until I bought a new iMac my computer set up was a core 2 duo
unibody 15" MacBook pro with a 30" apple cinema screen. (I use coda
Photoshop and illustrator daily). That system served me perfectly and was
only replaced because it was stolen! Best of luck

You all are really helping me! Thank you! I was so worried that I'd need
to buy that big Mac Pro. Do you think it's still overkill even if I hope to
get into graphic design one day? I'm thinking about doing that.

Also, glad to hear that MAMP is still the best choice for local
development. I use it but thought there may be something better. Dropbox
sounds like just what I need too.

Pair a 13" MacBook Pro with a 24" external, keyboard and mouse. You'll be
set.

No one needs a mac pro...

If you need more than a laptop but the Mac Pro is overkill, Consider the
iMac. The new 27" is incredibly powerful. You can use Dropbox to sync files
between that and your laptop. For a local development environment, install
MAMP - works like a charm.
