Holly, I started out on my own with a home-built PC that I dual-booted Mac OS 10.4 & Windows XP. I come from a computer hardware/software/networking tech support background so getting in and DYI'ing it wasn't that big an issue.
I migrated to a Walmart special Acer dual-core laptop which I proceeded to make into another Hackintosh. After building up the cashflow I purchased an iMac which became my primary system. If the Hackintosh isn't an option, the recommendations for the 13" Mac laptop & the off-brand flatscreen are exactly on target. Cheers!
