I¹ll chime in that the NextGen gallery does just what you want. It makes it
very easy to manage images, add captions/titles and to display the galleries
in a variety of ways.
There¹s a lot of support for it. Most of the configuration can be done in
the Wordpress admin area, but some things‹like changing the color of the
boarder in the images and thumbnails, still require skill with CSS.
