I thought they actually talked about allowing it to continue if there were
contributions to cover the cost.  I'll check on that.  Obviously any formal
effort in this cause would need to be worked closely with the Austin City
Council or City Manager at least.

Three quarters of a million dollars is a lot of money to collect in such an
ad hoc manner. I think you're probably talking about starting a non-profit
with that kind of budget as these are "donations" and there are reams of
laws and tax codes governing these. Also, I'm not sure the CoA is looking to
crowdsource the funds for Trail of Lights so you would probably need to get
their buy-in unless you're aiming to "force" them to reconsider canceling it
ala the Cactus Cafe uprising.
