Having implemented a donation page for the Texas Observer magazine iPad
app, the above is modestly inaccurate.
1) Apple does not allow in-app purchases for non-profit donations. This is a
good thing. You get to keep more of the money.
2) In app donations must be performed from within Safari and not a UIWebView.
You must leave the app, preferably by an URL. With the right URL mapping, you
can create a callback URL that will return you to the app when the donation is
either complete or canceled.
3) The app does not need to be free. You can charge for the app, charge for
premium upgrades, etc. Apple takes its customary 30% cut. It does not take a
cut of the donation through your web site.
