The automatic way made no difference so I tried the manual process. I now have almost all of the required version installed, a sort of "lucid Maveric". There is one problem: I cannot find the module libfbclient2 which is a dependency for the firebird2.1-dev module. An older version is available via the packagemanager but will not install because it is older and dependent on firebird2.1-common and common-doc.
