In nautilus, clicking the Windows' right click button has the same
functionality as right clicking via the mouse. Instead, it should right
click the file(s) that are currently selected in the file browser.
Reasoning:
If the user wants to right click somewhere in Nautilus, they point the
mouse there, and right click. As moving the mouse cursor to the wanted
position will always precurse the right click, the user will have his
hand on the mouse/trackpad when right clicking. As this is the case, the
most easy way to right click will simply be to click the right click
button of the mouse. It will never be to use the right click button on
the keyboard. Thereby, the user gains no advantage of the current
functioning of the Windows right click button.
Could the right click button gain more value? Are there situations in
which it would be nice to have a right click without having to resort to
the mouse? Yes:
When navigating around Nautilus using the keyboard, selecting
files/folders etc. one has ones hand positioned at the keyboard.
Sometimes one wants to perform a right click on some selected files. As
it is now, one will then have to move the hands to the mouse, position
the cursor over one of the selected files, and then right click. This
can be significantly shortened by assigning the right click button to
perform a right click on whichever files are currently selected in
nautilus. If no files are selected, I don't know what should then
happen. Either nothing or a normal mouse-right-button-click.
WAIT!! This paper cut gets even better (or worse):
I just realized that the right click button actually follows the behavior I
want! That I didn't realize it until now can be attributed to the fact that the
Windows right click button menu occurs whereever the mouse cursor is currently
positioned, and not somewhere near the selected files. The right click button
should occur near the selected files to avoid having users misunderstand the
functionality the way I just did.
