For a while, I've been using a workaround that would "echo level 7 > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan" every login to keep it maxed out - unfortunately this would not be high enough while running anything 3D, and my computer would often overheat (to dangerously high, lap SCORCHING levels) and shut down. My new workaround involves "echo level disengaged > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan", and that boosts my fan levels from ~4500 to ~5700. Thats a lot of missing RPM.
