Yes, absolutely correct Steve. Usually de Camp, I assume with permission
from Greenberg, tried to sell the story first to a mag before it went into
the Gnome books. This not only tested the market but allowed de Camp some
extra income during a period when living as a writer was not the best. The
main point was however, that Moorcock was later than de Camp. I'm not sure
how Moorcock was introduced to Conan but probably through the same Gnome
series de Camp worked on. Whether or not he saw any of the above mags in the
UK I don't know.
