I dont agree.  The new author should know that he/she is not writing canonical literature.  Only decamp/carter tried to mess with Howards original writings as far as i know.  The author knows whether or not he is doing it in praise of howards work or not.  As for insulting Howard by writing new stories about his character (which are not generally confused with the canonical writings anyway by most fans of howard) imitation is often seen as the highest form of flattery.

But see, here is the problem…pick up most of these pastiche novels, and you will see where they are listed alongside right in with the canon…this “wonderful” timeline of Conan’s career---pray tell, what is these supposed to mean???

 

I would also disagree with you and say they aren’t imitating REH---their writing style doesn’t even come close to that of REH’s.  And while the adage says imitation is the highest form of flattery, I also disagree with that too.  Imitation IMO shows only the lack of creativity in the imitator…
