Hi,

I have a very strange problem. I was using Mandrake 7.1 with a self-made
"vanilla" 2.2.18 kernel and the Reiser FS patch 3.5.31. Almost all my
filesystems are Reiserfs.

After upgrading to Mandrake 8 again with a "vanilla" 2.4.5 kernel
(reiserfs 3.6.25), I noticed that some of the files in the 3.5.31
formatted partitions seemed to be missing. I still have my 7.1 system,
and if I boot the old kernel, the files are still there. With 2.4.5,
though, they are invisible.

The invisible files I've found so far all belong to package I installed
some time ago. It was an upgrade to an existing package.

For example, I have a situation like this:
[ kernel 2.2 ]
$ ls
file-6.0.1
file-6.0.3

(file-6.0.3 is the update).

[kernel 2.4]
$ ls
file-6.0.1

file-6.0.3 is simply not there !?

I have recompiled my 2.4.5 kernel with Reiserfs internal checks, but no
error messages are displayed. The situation with the hidden files remains.
The situation is independent of whether I use Mandrake 8's gcc-2.96 or the
egcs compiler coming as "kgcc".

Here is the output of Reiserfs starting up on the partition in question:

ReiserFS version 3.6.25
reiserfs:warning: CONFIG_REISERFS_CHECK is set ON
reiserfs:warning: - it is slow mode for debugging.
reiserfs: checking transaction log (device 03:08) ...
journal-1153: found in header: first_unflushed_offset 4706,
last_flushed_trans_id 38538
journal-1206: Starting replay from offset 4706, trans_id 38538
journal-1299: Setting newest_mount_id to 220
Using tea hash to sort names
reiserfs: using 3.5.x disk format

Any ideas what this is due to? How can I debug it ?

Regards,
Martin
